December 2023 Update: Finalizing Renovation
A Message from DAWS Renovation Chair, Cheryl A. Rykowski:
So much has been happening lately that knowing where to begin this update is hard! Our building’s exterior has transformed over the last few weeks with new vinyl siding, a freshly poured sidewalk, and a reconfigured, graded, and asphalted driveway. Not only does it look gorgeous, but it’s also safer and easier to access the building and grounds. The newly sheet-rocked walls inside walls give us a glimpse of what our renovated spaces will look like when complete.
As we approach the end of 2023, we are excited to finalize this historic project. We are immensely grateful to Tary Tarlton, our builder, Lynne Persan, our architect, the entire renovation team, and everyone who has supported us throughout this journey. We will share more updates soon regarding our anticipated reopening in early 2024!
If you have any questions or would like to inquire how to support our project, please don’t hesitate to contact me at Cheryl.Rykowski@daws.org or 914.772.2789.
November 2023
A Message from DAWS Renovation Chair, Cheryl A. Rykowski:
This just in! We are thrilled to announce a MAJOR milestone: On Monday, November 6, we passed our Rough Inspection (framing, plumbing, electrical, and heating) from the City of Bethel! We can now begin insulating and closing the walls. YAY! Many aspects of the renovation are coming together simultaneously: Insulation on the inside and vinyl siding on the outside.
Check out this cool aerial shot of our “naked building” (courtesy of John Madaus of Innovation Media) and the vinyl siding rendering provided by our architect, Lynne Persan of Building Design, LLC. With grateful thanks to Lynne for her continued work making our renovated shelter a modern and beautiful building for animals, staff, volunteers, and supporters. More to come soon on our anticipated reopening in early 2024!

A Message from DAWS Renovation Chair, Cheryl A. Rykowski
Greetings!
As we journey through the past year, our updates have given you a sneak peek into the heart and soul of our establishment, both inside and outside its walls. But hold on to your seats because we’ve got something truly enchanting in store for the grounds as well!
Picture this: a serene memorial garden made possible through the incredible generosity of David and Cynthia Whitehouse. This tranquil oasis will be open to all – visitors, staff, and volunteers – offering a place for reflection and pure enjoyment.
Now, let’s talk about our four-legged friends. You might be aware that DAWS had three fantastic play yards where our dedicated caregivers could exercise, train, and create memorable moments for our dogs. But here’s the exciting news: thanks to the boundless creativity of our Renovation Landscaping Sub-Committee, we’re unleashing the magic of a fourth play yard!
This new addition will be no ordinary space; it’s a designated meet-and-greet yard open to prospective dog adopters and our cherished staff and volunteers. The best part? This exciting play yard is seamlessly connected to the memorial garden, creating a harmonious and delightful experience for all.
If you’re as thrilled about this new meet-and-greet play yard as we are and would like to be a part of this wonderful endeavor by sponsoring it, please reach out to Alice Meenan. Let’s make this dream a reality together!
If you have any questions about our exciting renovation project, please don’t hesitate to contact me at Cheryl.Rykowski@daws.org. Thank you for your generous support of our project.

Let there be light!
Last month’s renovation word was “momentum,” and this month, it is rhythm! The renovation is consistently moving forward, and, as promised, window installation has begun. Concrete slabs have been poured throughout the new kennel and renovated 1st floor of the main building. We have also refaced the lower portion of the exterior of the building to cover the existing concrete block so that we can uniformly add vinyl siding to the entire exterior. It will be gorgeous. Continued and profound thanks to Tary Tarlton of Kenosia Construction for his tireless efforts on DAWS’ behalf!

Our renovation word of the month is…momentum! Many aspects of our project are coming together all at once. Underground plumbing is complete, and we have started pouring concrete slab throughout the new kennel and all first-floor renovated spaces. The electrical installation has begun, as has the installation of the CleanWise wet/dry vac. Windows are arriving soon!

Last month we shared the exciting news that one of our renovation milestones was met thanks to Tary Tarlton and the Kenosia Construction team. We fully excavated the space for the brand-new kennel and clinic and poured the concrete footings and kennel foundation walls. These walls will provide better kennel insulation than traditional concrete block walls. Since then, the concrete work has been done for the kennel and the clinic, and the footings and foundation for the north, south, and east side of the existing building. Framing will soon follow so that we can close in the building and continue working throughout the winter. Check out our cool time-lapse video to see more.

MARCH 2022: “UNDERWAY!”
A MESSAGE FROM OUR RENOVATION CHAIR
I’m thrilled to announce that our renovation project kicked off, officially, on March 3rd with a ceremonial groundbreaking attended by over 60 supporters, dignitaries, donors, volunteers, staff, and friends.
Our wonderful builder, Tary Tarlton of Kenosia Construction, and our talented architect, Lynne Persan, were on-site to update well-wishers on our plans to modernize the facility and make it an even better haven for dogs and cats on their journey to find a family.
While we initially thought we would need to complete the renovation in two phases, we were humbled and awed by a series of very generous donations that are allowing us to fully replace our kennels, and upgrade the rest of the building, in ONE phase! Our anticipated completion date for ALL work is June 2023 with resumption of services, back in our shelter, shortly thereafter.
I look forward to keeping you informed of our progress along the way. It’s going to be exciting…and we’re going to do so much MORE for the lovable, adoptable dogs and cats in our care, and in our community.
If you have already made a campaign contribution, thank you. If you are still considering a gift to support this project, there are many opportunities available. Please contact our Development and Marketing Director to learn more at alice.meenan@daws.org.

NOV 2022: HARD WORK – BEHIND THE SCENES
A message from DAWS Renovation Chair, Cheryl A. Rykowski
This month’s DAWS renovation project update is a behind-the scenes story. The renovation committee has been hard at work finalizing some of the important systems and large purchases we’ll need for the renovated spaces throughout the building.

With kindest regards and deepest gratitude,

If you have any questions or would like to inquire about how to support our project, please don’t hesitate to contact me at Cheryl.Rykowski@daws.org or 914.772.2789.
